Youth in rural areas play a vital role in facing the challenges on access, availability and use of food worldwide with more population growth urbanization, globalization and climate change ahead. Globally young people account for approximately 24% of the working poor , particularly in Africa. For multiple reasons youth are an important demographic in development. First and foremost todays youth generation is the largest in history and the global population of young people is concentrated in low and middle income countries located. There’s a large untapped reservoir of employment opportunitiesin the agricultural sector which is increasing pinched by significant labour constraints in many areas of the world.we need to create a better food system that meets the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable. But our food systems are far more vulnerable without the active participation of the young people. To build a better food systems the young people must be leading the way.
PROBLEM STATEMENT: Young people perceive agriculture as a profession of intense labour,not profitable and unable to support their livelihood compared to white collar jobs offer . African agriculture or farming is mostly hoe and machete which makes it very energy and labour intensive hence hindering many youth from engaging in agriculture.
TARGETED POPULATION:
Youth, Farmers rural women, people with disabilities, agricultural technicians
EXPECTED OUTCOME: To create awareness about the opportunities available for young farmers and their role in recovering the broken food system which can go a long way to combat food insecurity and climate change. The world’s population is expected to increase by 2050 from 7billion to 9 billion people, so feeding these additional people need the active participation of more youth.
