This year, the United Nations will convene its first ever Food Systems Summit. This event represents a landmark opportunity to catalyze action for the Sustainable Development Goals and engage all of society in rethinking how the world produces food and supports healthy, sustainable diets for all.
Food Systems Summit Dialogues (FSSDs) are one of many ways that stakeholders from all walks of life can have their say in the future of food systems and help deliver on the Summit’s vision for transformation. This FSSD will explore the role that private sector can play in achieving a more sustainable future, based on practical examples from the aquaculture industry.
As the world’s fastest growing food sector, aquaculture plays an essential role in global food systems. To ensure this growth is managed responsibly, industry stakeholders have united in game-changing ways to develop and introduce sustainability improvements at speed and scale.
Over the years, this has driven rapid uptick of sustainability certifications, improvements in traceability, introductions of novel feeds, collective action on climate impact and mitigation and many more efforts.
Advancements like these are difficult, if not impossible, to achieve as individual companies, and often take significant resource and time or only engage few companies. In this Dialogue, participants will discuss and demonstrate how through private sector mobilization and multi-stakeholder collaborations these accomplishments are possible, and most importantly have the ability to drive the necessary transformations the global food system requires.
There are lessons learned from this industry’s sustainability journey that could help reveal opportunities for other sectors. This FSSD will identify best practices and future pathways for sustaining this momentum – both across and beyond the aquaculture industry.
Participants will also hear directly from Sophie Ryan, CEO of Global Salmon Initiative, Jason Clay, Senior Vice President of Markets at World Wildlife Fund, José Villalón, Corporate Sustainability Director at Nutreco, and Kristina Furnes, Global Communications Manager at Grieg Seafood about the role and impact of private-sector leadership on food system change.
This event is invitation only. Please contact Sophie Ryan ([email protected]) if interested in learning more.
