The Constitution of Nepal (2015) has enshrined the food security, right to food and food sovereignty as the fundamental right of its citizen. Access to affordable, healthy and nutritious food for all Nepalese citizen is high priority of the Government of Nepal. The UN Food System Summit 2021 is an opportunity for Nepal to examine food systems and to identify pathways for transformation to make it equitable, sustainable and resilient. Considering these aspects, National Planning Commission is organizing first National Food System dialogues on the theme “Nepal towards an equitable, resilient and sustainable food system”. There will be six discussion topics in line with the five objectives (i. ensure access to safe and nutritious food for all, ii. shift to sustainable consumption patterns, iii. boost nature-positive production, iv. advance equitable livelihoods, and v. build resilience to vulnerabilities, shocks and stress) of UN Food System Summit 2021 and policy environment. As per the constitution, the Right to Food and Food Sovereignty Act, 2018 has been promulgated. Therefore, the dialogue will take place on Right to Food and Food Sovereignty Act under the policy environment as a means and legal framework to transform food systems in Nepal.
